Sunday Best

In many countries, religion is an assigned identity that is part of your family & heritage.  I feel very fortunate to be living in one where religious affiliation is completely my own choice.  I have recently found my spiritual home in what my parents would most likely call a "new age" church; one of those meeting in a gymnasium for now because it's growing so quickly & the kind that starts up with a rock band playing while we sing to words on a screen.  The other difference between this church & the one of my youth is the dress code.
My new church is led in prayer each Sunday morning by an extremely gifted 31 year old pastor. This is what he was wearing today;

I used to think it was inappropriate to wear street clothes in Church.  Today, I think it is not only acceptable but is an illustration of the changing face of religion.  First of all, I believe a loving God wants us all to be comfortable & able to express ourselves as we wish.  Second, if more young people are being drawn to a faith-based life because they feel they belong, I think this is a good thing.  It's all about freedom, right?

There are still some great fashion moments, they just don't involve hats & gloves anymore.  Here is what the girl directly in front of me was wearing;

A short, blunt bob haircut

A light tan & white striped tee shirt

A medium blue & white polka dot pencil skirt
similar to this one from Delhia's

Another girl I spotted was wearing;

A high 'beehive' ponytail similar to Jennifer Aniston's below.

A dark grey heather tee shirt
similar to this Topshop dolman sleeve one

A sienna brown colored shaped skinny belt
like this one from Nacona.

A pleated navy twill pleated skirt

Metropolitan Gala 2012 Worsties

And now for Part II of the red carpet report from the Met Gala 2012
The Worsties!

Marc Jacobs in Skivvies by Marc Jacobs (& Comme Des Garconnes)
There is this sheer trend happening this season, but why does it have to happen in the form of a long lace collared shirt over a pair of unremarkable white boxers?  And what is with the pilgrim shoes?  Perhaps this is so fashion forward that I just don't get it...

Jenna Lyons from J. Crew in a denim jacket & taffeta skirt
Proving that there are some things that DON'T go with a jean jacket.

Christina Ricci in a BIG ASS BOW (on a Thakoon dress)

Amy Poehler in Fotini
Biker chic bustier meets a table-skirt peplum all while Amy furiously fights off a large black furry dog attached to her ankle. Amy, please, for the love of God, hire a stylist.

Bianca Brandolini in Dolce & Gabbana
At first glance, I thought this picture was King Henry VIII in drag.

www.redcarpet-fashionawards.com

Kirsten Dunst in Rodarte
Rodarte is known for being inventive & inspiring, but this is just retro & dowdy.

Getty Photo

Chloe Sevigney in Mui Mui
I really thought this dress was made of some sort of digital media strung together with zip ties.  We might applaud it if it were a student project at an eco-fashion show.

www.redcarpet-fashionawards.com

Kristen Stewart in Balmain
I'm all for the leopard & the fresh take on color-blocking, but I find it a bit cocktail rather than red carpet.  The real problem is that I can't get past those awful shoes that make her feet look like stunted little goat hooves.

Splash Photo

Dianne Kruger in Prada
I love the color, the basic shape & the luxurious feathers, but I find the fit horrendous.  The top looks like a stretched-out tank top hanging from her frame & exposing side-boobs in its wake.  With that body, she can do SO much better.

Getty Photo

Gwenyth Paltrow in Prada
I know Gwenyth just wanted to show off those killer legs, but I find this dress way too short & way too inviting for a major wardrobe malfunction.  It makes me nervous to watch her.

Splash Photo

Leighton Meester in Marchesa
Marchesa always does the lace on a sheer background really well, but this time the spurts of tulle at the bottom didn't complement the rest of the dress.  Truthfully, it reminds me of the matted hair I try to get out of my cat's ungroomed coat.

And bringing up the rear (literally) is:
Beyonce in Givenchy
I realize she wanted to show off her post-baby body & make a grand entrance, but the nude bodysuit allowing her cheeks to show through the lace was em-bare-assing (yes, I went there).   The train of feathers was impressive, but looked to me like they had pulled away from the rest of the dress.  I mean, even Beyonce will have a hard time shaking a tail feather if her tail is disjointed.

Metropolitan Gala 2012 Besties

METROPOLITAN GALA 2012

The Costume Institute Gala held at the New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art this year showcased "Schiaparelli and Prada: Impossible Conversations," the museum's new exhibition, as well as quite a collection of fashion standouts on the red carpet.

Gala chairs Anna Wintour, editor in chief of Vogue magazine, newlywed actress Carey Mulligan and designer Muccia Prada hosted the event.  Seen here are Anna & Muccia both dressed in Prada, naturally.  Anna's gown has gold lobsters embroidered on it, which is a nod to a Schiaparelli dress designed for the Duchess of Windsor.

The following are my picks for the best dressed at the event:

Nina Dobrev in Donna Karan
Many fashion writers use the word 'liquid' when describing a dress; nowhere else does it apply more than Nina Dobrev's gilded, molten masterpiece.  I love the neckline, the seamless mix of materials and that train..oh that train.
AP photo
Karolina Kurkova in Rachel Zoe
Karolina is having an Iman moment here, which is pretty much the apex of model achievement.  Only a handful could pull off this rose gold, sequined, mandarin-collared, sharp-shouldered, long sleeve goddess gown by sophomore designer Rachel Zoe, and Karolina does so with stunning results.
Getty Photo
Jessica Alba in Michael Kors
Jessica is channeling a bronzed Veronica Lake screen siren in this perfectly-sculpted metallic Kors gown.  The shirred shoulder, the cinched waist & the full skirt create a striking silhouette.
Splash Photo
January Jones in Versace
The traffic-stopping color, the metallic darts & the molded peplum all combine for show-stopping results on January's rockin' (post-baby!) body.
AP photo
Elizabeth Banks in Mary Katrantzou
Unique, sophisticated & hot off the runway.  Elizabeth, I applaud your wardrobe moxy!

Cate Blanchett in Alexander McQueen
I love Cate, I love McQueen.  The feathers are fabulous!
Reuters Photo
Rihanna in Tom Ford
Rihanna apparently arrived late, not because of her second-skin, crocodile-embossed Tom Ford gown, but because of her laquered claws.. I mean, nails..
Splash Photo
Sophia Vergara in Marchesa
This dress could give curves to a board, so put this on Sophia & you have a knockout!
www.glamour.com
Karlie Kloss in Jason Wu
If you told me the dress would be hot pink over black lace, my thoughts would have veered toward High School Prom in the 80's. Hand these same materials over to Jason Wu, and the effect is spectacular.
www.en.louloumagazine.com
Amber Heard in Zac Posen
Zac (in his fab velvet tux) has as much fun swinging Amber around the red carpet in this raspberry confection as he does designing it, I think.
www.wwd.com

Camilla Belle in Ralph Lauren
Camilla looks statuesque in this gorgeous Ralph Lauren silvery study in simplicity.  Her upswept hair, glittery pedant earrings & dark berry lip combine flawlessly.
www.fashioniseverywhere.com
Ashley Greene in Donna Karan
Despite the incredibly awkward & possibly painful pose, Ashley still looks gorgeous & ethereal in her white DK gown with the wispy train.

Color Trend: Yellow

Yellow shines with optimism, energy, and happiness.
The color of the blazing sun, the harvest moon and blooming daffodils.
But yellow can be tricky to wear & one of the hardest colors to keep pristine.

Cate has my vote for the most memorable yellow fashion moment.
Then Paula came along this year & reignited my enthusiasm.
Now I've been watching it crop up recently as a hot color trend.
